Joseph Ballou Hardwick

Hardwick, Joseph Ballou, age 89, died peacefully on June 14, 2014. Beloved husband of over 60 years to the late Evelyn (Schafer) Hardwick, and loving father of Karen Beckett (Richard), Joseph Hardwick, Jr. and David Hardwick (Laura). Joe was preceded in death by parents Joseph and Lucy Belle Hardwick, sister Fanny (Hardwick) Feltner and daughter Janet (Hardwick) Price and son-in-law Lansing Price. Joe was a wonderful grandfather to Colleen, Angela, Charles, Jennifer, Lansing II, Grace, Claire and Eleanor and great-grandfather to Katie Anne, Wyatt, Lansing III, and Caroline. Born in Somerset Kentucky, he is also survived by siblings David Hardwick (Rosie) and Charles Hardwick (Sheilagh), brother-in-law Dillard Feltner and many nieces and nephews. Proud of his Kentucky heritage, Joe was the recipient of the Kentucky Colonel Award by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He enjoyed all the traditions associated with growing up in Kentucky including the Kentucky Derby, Bourbon and Kentucky bluegrass. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, reading, sports and traveling. Joe set a wonderful example to his entire family by emphasizing the importance of education, hard work and honesty. He was a graduate of Somerset High School. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and served in the Army Air Corps. He later graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a degree in Accounting. After a successful career with the Department of Defense, Joseph spent many years traveling the world with his beloved wife, Evelyn. He will be greatly missed. Family and friends will be welcomed at Routsong Funeral Home 2100 East Stroop Road, Kettering Ohio on Sunday June 22, 2014 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at The Church of Saint Charles Borromeo, 4500 Ackerman Blvd., Kettering, on Monday June 23, 2014 at 10:30 am followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery.
