DUES, Joseph J., age 81, a life long resident of Dayton, entrepreneur and businessman passed away quietly on the afternoon of June 7th at Hospice of Dayton. Mr. Dues was born in Minster, OH, to Fred B. and Florence Ripploh Dues. He was known for his entrepreneurial skills, identifying consumer needs and building businesses around them. After attending the University of Notre Dame (ND) and serving as a Naval Officer in the Pacific during World War II, he began his business career as a sales engineer for Salisbury Motors Division of Northrop Corporation. Shortly thereafter, he went into business on his own, starting Dues Motor and Cycle Supply and then Dues, Inc., a wholesale distributor of consumer products. Concurrently, he worked with partners to kick off the E-Z Go Golf Cart Business and a Fruehof Trailer franchise. Mr. Dues recognized the coming of the large discount retailers and sold his primary business to Kruse Hardware in the 1960s, thereafter creating a real estate development and construction company, Dues Building Systems, Inc. It became one of the largest builders of Butler buildings in the country. After a few years he branched into Dues Development Company and pioneered the Commerce Park Industrial Park concept in North America and Europe, including 2000 acres in Tri-County, North Cincinnati. He continued the Dues Companies’ growth, expanding into pre-cast / pre-stress concrete building components before turning his interest to the design, fabrication and manufacturing of insulation machinery equipment. This new company, MFI Technologies, pioneered manufacturing plant installations for Rock Wool and Fiberglass production in North America, Europe, and China. Mr. Dues was a past chairman of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO), the Chief Executive Organization (CEO), a founding member of the National Association of Industrial Parks (NAIP), and numerous other organizations over his 60 year career. He was also a past chairman of the American Heart Association, Miami Valley Chapter, one of the founders and Secretary of the National Hearing Association, former Director of the Dayton Hearing & Speech Center, and past Chairman of The Parents Council of St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana. He was active in the VFW, the Notre Dame Club of Dayton and a member of Holy Angels Church. For many years he served on the Parish Council of Holy Angels Church and was a longtime member of Kettering Rotary. He was preceded in death by his brother, William H. Dues of Versailles, OH. Closing ·Dad, we love you and cherish the memories. A friend (Bob Vari) said to me recently how much his life was affected by knowing Dad…he was able to see more, do more and be exposed to more in this world than he could have ever been able to do had he not known Dad….upon reflection it seems to me each of us who knew him must have been blessed in some way like this too. ·Dad…a special note: most all of us voted for you, were glad we met you, and the experiences with you were a real pleasure. As you told us many times, they aren’t making any more Dad’s for us….we’re OK with that….I know Julie, Peggy, Tom and I were blessed with the best. Rest in Peace…go with God, Root for Notre Dame, give our best to Uncle Barney, Uncle Lud, Uncle Jimmy, Uncle Bill, Uncle Noah, and Cousins Linda, Michael, Donnie and Diane. Say hello to Tom Hennessey and yes check on Charlie Earnhart….make sure nothing sinister has followed him to heaven.
·Lastly, Dad… A man is loved not for how tall he stands, but for how often he bends to help, comfort, and teach…THAT IS THE MEASURE OF A MAN…THAT WAS YOU DAD….WE LOVE YOU.
