COLEMAN, Joseph William, age 68, of Beavercreek passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at Hospice of Dayton. Joseph was born on April 13, 1945, in New Castle, PA to the late Harry and Dollie Coleman.
Joseph graduated from New Castle High School in 1963. He later went on to earn a Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 1967, a Master of Business Administration degree from Golden Gate University in 1975 and his PhD in Quantitative Business Analysis from Arizona State University in 1980. Doctor Coleman's academic service and outreach encompassed research, presentations, publications, as well as teaching. He was dedicated to his work at Wright State University where he attained the rank of full professor. He was active on various University committees including the University Budget Committee and Strategic Planning Council.
While serving in the United States Air Force, Joseph was group chief of the Titan III Launch Operations Center located in Vanderburg AFB, CA and served as chief of the Acquisition Logistics of the Human Resources Branch at Wright Patterson AFB until his retirement in 1988. Joseph earned a Meritorious Service Medal during his time at Wright Patterson AFB as well as other decorations during his military service. He attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Joseph was a member of the Bethel AME Church in New Castle, PA, a past member of Parity 2000, past President of the Kettering Children's Choir and district leader of the Cancer Support Group. Joseph was a fellow in the American Real Estate Society, a member of the American Statistical Association, a member of the Association of Information Technology Professionals, a member of Omega Rho (National Operations Research Honorary) and Alpha Iota Delta (National Decision Sciences Honorary). Joseph was an avid reader and trivia buff. He enjoyed music and theater and had many collections including both stamps and coins. Joseph will be missed by all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Patricia Smith Coleman. Joseph is survived by his wife and sweetheart of 44 years, Dr. Florence (Squire) Coleman; daughter, Dr. Joy Lynn (Dr. Robert Eisner) Coleman of Chicago; grandson, Lukas Cole Eisner; brothers, Albert Louis Coleman of West Middlesex, PA, Dr. Raymond (Marie) Coleman of Philadelphia, PA and Harvey James (Paquita) Coleman of Atlanta, GA; and many nieces, nephews, and other family, friends, and colleagues.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 East Stroop Road, Kettering. Family will greet friends following the service until 2:00pm. Burial will be held at Todd Homestead Cemetery in Youngstown, OH at a later date.
Donations in Joseph's name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2808 Reading Rd., Cincinnati, Ohio 45206. The family would like to thank the staff of Kettering Medical Center Network, Hospice of Dayton and Heartland of Beavercreek for their dedication and care.
