Joyce Hapner, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on February 10, 1943, in Harriman, Tennessee, Joyce’s journey through life was marked by her unwavering love for family, her deep commitment to community, and her passionate interests.
A proud graduate of Fairmont High School in 1961, Joyce met the love of her life, Ronald (Ron) Hapner, during her senior year. They began their lifelong partnership with marriage in June 1962, embarking on a journey that would last an incredible 62 years. Together, they first resided in Columbus before settling in Kettering, Ohio, where they created a warm and loving home. They later moved to Miamisburg and found themselves blessed with many new friends.
For over forty years, Joyce dedicated herself to her work as a legal secretary, a role that not only nourished her professional aspirations but also allowed her to lend her organizational skills to various community endeavors. Her commitment to the Dayton Philharmonic Volunteer Association as treasurer showcased her love for the arts and her desire to support her community. Joyce also enjoyed participating in local clubs such as the Bridge Club, Garden Girls, Read a Book Club (aka Fairmont Lunch Bunch), and the Pipestone Neighborhood LOL Book Club, and her Friday Night Dinner Group, where she cherished the friendships and connections formed throughout the years.
Joyce had a special fondness for spending family time on their houseboat at Lake Cumberland in Kentucky and traveling with Ron, seeking adventures from cruises to beach vacations with their children and grandchildren. A talented cook and entertainer, Joyce found joy in hosting gatherings for family and friends. Her true delight came from the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren—moments that filled her heart with happiness. An avid reader, Joyce kept her mind sharp with crossword puzzles, Wordle, and countless games of Scrabble.
Joyce is preceded in death by her father Landis Henry, mother Bessie King Henry Coleman, and stepfather Howard Coleman. She leaves behind her devoted husband, Ronald Hapner; daughters Jennifer (Brian) Mahle and Michelle (Mark) Weber; and a cherished family of grandchildren, Alex (Jason) Stinebaugh, Kelly (Miranda) Mahle, Brody Mahle, Nathan, Riley, Danielle, and Luke Weber. Joyce also takes with her the love of her great-grandchildren, Sutton and Quinn Stinebaugh, and Kash Mahle. Additionally, she is survived by her sister, Betty Houston, brother-in-law, Skip (Sue) Hapner, sister-in-law, Kyle (Gary) Martin, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held from 10 am to noon at Routsong Funeral Home, Centerville Chapel (81 N Main St), on December 19, 2024, where family and friends will gather to honor Joyce’s memory. A funeral service will immediately follow at noon, celebrating a life dedicated to love and community. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Hospice of Dayton, friends and family.
Joyce will be forever remembered for her laughter and loving spirit, which are evident in a message she left to share: “Sorry to miss more fun, but I got an offer I can’t refuse. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice. May God bless all of you.”
