Judy R. Montgomery, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, creativity, and devotion to family, the arts and community. Born in February 1942, to Raymond and Gladys Gitzinger, Judy brought passion and warmth to everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Judy grew up in Oakwood, Ohio, where she attended the Oakwood schools and met the love of her life, David Montgomery. High School sweethearts, Judy and David were married on June 19, 1965. They celebrated 59 wonderful years of marriage, filled with love, devotion, laughter, and shared adventures. Judy earned her two undergraduate degrees from the University of Cincinnati, where her passion for art blossomed into a lifelong vocation, followed by a masters’ degree from Wright State University. She was an artist in her own right, and taught art at The Miami Valley School and later inspired countless students with her art history classes at Wright State University. Judy was a dedicated docent at the Dayton Art Institute, sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm of art and art history with visitors. Her commitment to the DAI extended to her work on the Associate Board and as a long-standing member of the Jefferson Patterson Society.
Judy’s love of art took her around the world to visit museums and immerse herself in the beauty and history of different cultures. She shared her appreciation for art with her family, especially her three grandchildren, Lily, Madeline, and William, whom she adored. Judy was a grandmother like no other—teaching art lessons at her house, attending recitals, finding unique gifts for every occasion, and creating special memories at every opportunity. Beyond her artistic pursuits, Judy was an avid reader and a cherished member of the Friday Afternoon Club for many years. She treasured the time spent with her dear friends in thoughtful conversation and laughter. Judy found joy and tranquility at the Florida condo she shared with family, relishing the sunshine, sand and exploring local adventures.
Judy is survived by her devoted husband, David Montgomery; her son, David Montgomery, Jr., and his wife, Mary; her three grandchildren, Lily, Madeline, and William; a sister, in-laws, nieces, nephews and a community of friends and admirers who will forever remember her warmth, wisdom, and love of life.
Judy’s family invites you to celebrate her life by making a donation to the Dayton Art Institute or The Miami Valley School (https://www.miamivalleyschool.org/giving/donate) in her honor, continuing her legacy of supporting the arts and education.
