Karen Lucas Moulton

April 29, 1967 — April 5, 2025

Oakwood

MOULTON, Karen Lucas age 57, of Oakwood, Ohio passed away on April 5, 2025, in Dayton Ohio. She was born on April 29, 1967 in Fairfield, California; grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and lived on Air Force Bases all across the United States. Karen’s journey was marked by Christian faithfulness. Her giftedness with young children blossomed as a teenage babysitter. Karen’s passion for education grew through college coursework, student teaching and ultimately a masters degree in Early Childhood Special Education. In her early career, Karen touched young lives by way of braille and sign language with her students in Baltimore, Maryland. Stepping away from the classroom, Karen fully dedicated her time and talents to raising her five children. She whole-heartedly supported each of them in every endeavor. She modeled a life of servant leadership marked by vulnerability, authenticity and integrity. Karen eventually returned to her roots as a professional educator in the Oakwood and Bellbrook School Districts. She edified the lives of her preschoolers with constant care and creativity. She worked tirelessly with colleagues and families to meet the needs of the children, fostering a safe and nurturing environment for her learners to thrive in her classroom, and well beyond.

Karen’s enthusiasm for walking and hiking was infectious. As an avid runner, she covered myriad miles with dear friends and with her kids in baby joggers, as well as many solo ventures. She participated in numerous marathons, ranging from regional events to the esteemed Marine Corps Marathon. During a recent trip to Scotland, Karen insisted on visiting the beach where “Chariots of Fire” was filmed because she loved the Olympic story of Eric Liddell. She found resonance in his testimony; wherein he declared, “Circumstances may appear to wreck our lives and God’s plans, but God is not helpless among the ruins. God’s love is still working. He comes in and takes the calamity and uses it victoriously, working out His wonderful plan of love.” Everyone stood in awe of her resilience while living with cancer. She lived out her days with humility, poise and grace.

Karen was preceded in death by her father, Robert Lucas.

She is survived by her mother, Mary Lucas; brother, Bill Lucas; son, Joshua Moulton; daughter, Sarah Moulton; son, Samuel Moulton; daughter, Hannah Moulton; son, Benjamin Moulton; and devoted family friends Bob and Mary Linzmeier. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 13 from 4:00 until 4:45 pm; followed by a visitation from 5:00 until 7:00 pm at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 Stroop Road, Kettering, Ohio 45429.
