MAKARIUS, Katherine "Katie" Ann, passed away on January 12, 2012 at Kettering Medical Center following a sudden illness. Born in Wabash, Indiana on July 8, 1928, Katie relocated to the Dayton area as a child. She is remembered for giving to her family and others with great generosity.
Katie was a graduate of Oakwood HS (1946) and Miami University, Oxford (1951), where she received a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Painting and Sculpture, a reflection of her personal passion for the arts. While at Miami, she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and continued that affiliation through the Dayton alumnae chapter.
Katie was a volunteer for Kettering Medical Center's Flower Shop, having accumulated 5, 000 hours of service over 24 years. She was also an active member of The Dayton's Woman Club, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Progressive Mothers, and Kettering Sister Cities. She served on the Associate Board of the Dayton Art Institute, where she co-chaired the Art Ball.
In 2005, Katie was inducted into Buckeye Trails Girl Scout Council Hall of Fame for many years of volunteerism including district chair of cookie sales.
Katie was preceded in death by her husband Robert J. Makarius, Jr.; parents, Edith M. and Howard J. Smith of Oakwood; and sister, Sandra Jean Smith of Oakwood. She is survived by her daughters, Mary M. McDonald (Kevin) of Washington Township and Martha A. Slager (James) of Oxford, OH, along with grandchildren R.J. Burgess, Paul Robert Burgess and Molly Katherine McDonald. Surviving siblings are Joan "Joey" Thiele of Oakwood, John H. Smith of Kettering and Martha Starick of Denver.
Funeral services will be held, Monday, January 16, 2012 at 11:00am at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 33 W Dixon Ave Dayton, OH 45419. Family will receive guests following the service until 2:00pm in the church parlor. Burial in David's Cemetery.
