POPE, Leonard E. age 84, of Dayton, formerly of Centerville passed away after a brief illness. Born July 15, 1920, the only child of parents, Arthur and Agnes Pope. Leonard served in the Army during WWII. He graduated from West Carrollton High School in 1938 and attended Sinclair Community College. Leonard retired from General Motors after 34 years in the Timekeeping Department. After retirement, he drove a school bus for Centerville for approximately 10 years. He was an active 50-year member of the Masonic Blue Lodge and served as Master of Rock Moriah Lodge from 1993-1994, now called Far Hills Lodge. Leonard was a member of York Rite, a 32nd Degree Mason, member of the Antioch Shrine for 40 years and member of the Mounted Horse Patrol for 37 years. He was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church for 20 years, serving as head usher. For many years, Leonard was Santa Claus for children, a Boy Scout leader, and referee and coach for baseball and football, and was a volunteer fireman for Centerville. He also transported children to the Cincinnati Children’s Burns Hospital or Lexington Orthopedic Hospital for many years. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Agnes Pope; infant daughter who died at birth; and stepson, Tim Johnson. He is survived by his loving wife of 14 years, Kathleen; mother-in-law, Esther Moster of Oakwood; step-daughter, Linnya (Larry) Richardson of Kettering; granddaughter, Alexandria Kathleen Simons of Lexington, KY; and Rick (Jamie) Johnson of New Lebanon, OH. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 31, 2005 at 10:00 AM at the Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering with Pastor Marla Brown officiating. Burial in David’s Cemetery. Family will receive friends Wednesday, March 30th, from 4-7:00 PM at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church at a later date.
