CARLSON, Lila G., age 92, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2016 at Hospice of Dayton, OH, comforted by immediate family members.
She was preceded in death by husband "Swede" Carlson in 1984. An amazing woman, Lila lived an incredible and interesting life. Oh, the stories she could tell!
A member of what has been called the "Greatest Generation" and born in Dayton, Ohio in 1923, she graduated from the Miami Valley School of Nursing in 1944, then became an Army Air Corps flight nurse at the end of WWII and met Swede at Eglin AFB, Florida. They eloped to New Orleans in June of 1948, and she left active duty later that year, transitioning to the U.S. Air Force Reserves.
Lila traveled the world with Swede as an Air Force spouse, with assignments including Greece, Germany and Taiwan. Upon Swede's retirement from the Air Force, they moved to the Pacific Northwest, finally settling in Newport, Oregon.
Lila made her home in Newport for over 35 years, where for a number of years, Lila and Swede owned the charter boat, "The Chiloquin". She was also active in several local businesses, an avid swimmer, and a key volunteer through the years, most notably at Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital, where she accumulated over 6500 volunteer hours in medical records.
She was known as "Beautiful Lila" probably because she alone could read the doctor's scribblings Continuing her nursing skills, she maintained her certification, and always remained a licensed RN..!!
She is survived by sons Christopher & Michael, her stepson, John, numerous grandchildren/great-grandchildren, and many others who knew how big her heart was.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, OR.
