HACKER, Lydia S., 87 of Kettering, died Monday, January 3, 2005 at Bethany Lutheran Village. Lydia was born June 10, 1917, in Akron, Ohio, the daughter of John and Sarah (Bennett) McLean. She was raised in Dayton, Ohio, by her maternal grandparents and graduated valedictorian of the Roosevelt High School class of 1935. On August 15, 1939, she married her high school sweetheart, Homer O. Hacker. Mrs. Hacker participated actively in family, school, church, and community life. When her sons were growing, she served as volunteer and leader for Scouting and PTA. When her husband became a professional watercolor artist, she managed the business matters. She took part in Garden Club and enjoyed numerous bridge clubs. A member of Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church for 35 years, Mrs. Hacker served in many capacities, including Elder, Deacon, “Crafty Ladies,” Naomi Circle, and Martha Circle. She received a lifetime service award in the women’s association in 1986. In 2004, the Martha Circle was recognized by the Dayton Mental Health Hospital for 35 years of compassion ministries to patients. Mrs. Hacker is preceded in death by her parents, son Richard Hacker, and two brothers. She is survived by husband, Homer; sons, Thomas Hacker (Margaret) of Portland, OR, William Hacker (partner Jeffrey Vasquez) of Seattle, WA, and Chris Hacker (partner Will Thomas) of New York City, NY; grandchildren, Dr. Sally Hacker (Dr. Ed Brook) of Corvallis, OR, Jennifer Hacker (Afshin Gharib) of San Francisco, CA, Dr. Jacob Hacker (Dr. Oona Hathaway) of New Haven, CT, Sarah Hacker of Portland, OR, Kiran Hacker of Amagasaki, Japan, and Alice Hacker of St. Paul, MN; great-grandchildren, Ben (Corvallis, OR), Ava and Owen (New Haven, CT), and Noah (Portland, OR). Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 8, 2005 at Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church, Bigger Road at Wilmington Pike, Kettering, with the Rev. Dr. Julia K. Wharff officiating. Inurnment in David’s Cemetery. Family will receive friends Friday, 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd. Kettering. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church, 4417 Bigger Rd, Kettering OH, 45440.
