Born in Duluth, Minnesota, she lived in Boston, Chicago, New York, Dayton and Bethesda, MD, before retiring to the Dayton area. She graduated from nursing school to become a Registered Nurse, practicing at St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago until her marriage to William, on October 16, 1944 in Deland, Fla., where he trained in a U.S. Navy Dive Bomber Squadron.
After her three children were older, Peg returned to nursing, working at Kettering Memorial Hospital for 12 years in the cardiac care, intensive care, and surgical care units. She served as a volunteer for 24 years at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, where she was a long-time member of the volunteer board of directors and organized annual fund-raising golf tournaments. She received several honorary service awards. She spent all of her life caring for others and at the end of her life benefited from those who cared for her: the nurses at Bethany Lutheran and the employees at the Hospice of Dayton.
Peggy was a loving and caring person to everyone she met and was known for her devotion to her patients, diligence, and professional skills. She had many friends and especially enjoyed spending time with her three great-grandchildren. She is survived by her devoted husband of 68 years, William J. Ahlfeld; daughter, Kathleen Engle and husband, Kenneth; son, Kevin Ahlfeld and wife, Ellen; son, Kerry Ahlfeld; grandson, Brian and his wife, Jackie Ahlfeld, and their children, Matthew and Emily; granddaughter, Kathleen Marie and her husband, Dr. Chris Schneider, and their son, Brady and granddaughater, Laura Ahlfeld. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Charles Church in Kettering, Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at 10:30am with burial services to follow at David's Cemetery.
The family would like to express its sincere thanks for the wonderful help and care and suggest that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be sent to the Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, OH 45420.
