Mary Alice Long

April 1, 1918 — December 5, 2006

LONG, Mary Alice (Shock), second eldest daughter of Clarence V. Shock and Catherine Duncan Shock, closed her eyes for her final rest on December 5, 2006. Mary passed away at the home she shared with daughter Barbara in Washington Twp. At her passing, Mary was attended by her three children and enveloped by the love of her many grand and great-grandchildren. Mary was born in Preble County, April 1, 1918. She graduated from Madison High School in 1936, and married James Paul (Pappy) Long April 17, 1937. Predeceasing Mary were her sister, Margaret Cameron; sister, Ida Mae; her husband Roy Neuhauser; great grandson, Arron Atherton; devoted son-in-law, Don Smith; and husband of fifty-three years, WWII Navy Veteran Paul (Pappy) Long. Mary is survived by her brother Ed Shock, daughters Barbara Parks, Patti Smith, and son James P. Long (Wanda). Left to share the loss of this loving, independent woman are eleven grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and her very dear friend Linda Basinger of Lima, Ohio. Mary was active in the Far Hills 7th Day Adventist Church and their Dorcas Society until age and circumstances no longer permitted. She worked and managed the home during WWII, was a practical nurse at the VA Hospital, office manager of the family business – Arco Plumbing, owner and manager of Second Story Antiques, and worked for the Springboro Pike location of Fazoli’s Restaurant after her retirement. In addition to the family, Mary’s interests were wide and varied: antiques, wildlife, birds, flowers and the historical buildings in the Dayton area. She especially enjoyed visiting Jim’s family and the mountain scenery of British Columbia, Canada. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Heartland of Centerville for the care given to Mary during four rehabilitation stays in the last year and a half, to those in Heartland Home Care and Hospice of Dayton for their comforting staff and assistance in allowing Mary’s wish to remain at home in the care of loved ones. The family will receive friends from 3-5:00 PM on Sunday, Dec. 10th at Routsong Funeral Home, 81 N. Main St., Centerville. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, Dec. 11th at the funeral home with Pastor Winston Baldwin officiating. Flowers and/or condolences may be sent to the family via the funeral home’s website at www.routsong.com.
