Mary Clunet Sawtelle

October 6, 1907 — July 13, 2001

age 93, died Friday, July 13, 2001 after a long illness. She was born in Oakwood and resided there most of her life. Mary graduated with the first class from Oakwood High School and attended Smith College for two years. She was a past President of the Junior League of Dayton, Chairman of the Occupational Therapy Association Board, the first Director of the Volunteer Service Bureau of Dayton (1949), and Director of the Volunteer Service Bureau of Cincinnati (1962) until her retirement in 1972. Mary was also Chairman of various fund raising efforts for the Community Chest in Dayton and the Oakwood YMCA and was elected National President of the Association of Volunteer Service Bureaus. Preceded in death by her parents, Nathaniel S. and Mary Edward Parrott Clunet of Briar Hill, Oakwood; 3 sisters, Henrietta Light, Aimee Wilson and Natalie Thornquest; a daughter, Clunet Gebhardt; and her former husband, Ross Sawtelle. Survived by a son, E. R. Sawtelle of Budapest, Hungary; 6 grandchildren, LCDR E. R. Sawtelle USN, of Singapore, A. Katarina Sawtelle M.D., of Belfast, ME, Robert C. Gebhardt of San Carlos, CA, Mikaela S. Meredith of Arlington, VA., Peter R. Gebhardt of Mill Valley, CA, and Kathryn Anne Petek of Medical Lake, WA; 5 great grandchildren, Danielle and David Sawtelle, Hudson and Hannah Petek, and Erika Gebhardt; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 2:30 P.M., Saturday, July 28, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 33 W. Dixon Ave., Oakwood with Rev. Melody Williams officiating. A burial will be held at the H. E. Parrott family plot at Woodland Cemetery. If desired, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Montgomery County Unit, 40 S. Perry St., Suite 120, Dayton, Ohio 45402-1429.
