Mary Eileen Heckel

HECKEL, Mary Eileen, was born on August 13, 1927 in Dayton, Ohio. Daughter of Charles and Iola Blanford, she left this world on May 9, 2015 resting peacefully with her family. Mary spent her entire life in Dayton. She is survived by her brother William Blanford, her children Tom, Ann, Jane and John; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Her beloved husband, Bert, predeceased her. Mary grew up on Monmouth Street in East Dayton, between Holy Family School and the convent. She liked to tell her children that she could "roll out of bed into school" and get there before the nuns. Mary's early years were centered around Holy Family parish life. Although being the smallest and last of five children she could more than hold her own when it came to sports. She graduated from Julienne high school in 1945, then worked for Elders, where she met Bert and sold him the most expensive photo album in the store. Following her marriage, Mary's work was in the home and as a volunteer at St. Albert the Great School and Church. She and her husband could be found serving food to the homeless at the St. Vincent de Paul shelter on many Friday nights. After her faith Mary's family was most important to her, especially her husband Bert, to whom she was married 63 years. A long time parishioner at St. Albert the Great parish, for many years she went to daily mass with her husband. She actively bore witness to her faith. Family will greet friends on Thursday, May 14, 2015 from 5:00pm-7:00pm at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd, Kettering, OH. Funeral services will be private.
