Mary Elizabeth Smith

October 21, 1923 — July 7, 2005

Smith, Mary E., born October 10, 1923 in Philadelphia, PA, and died July 2, 2005 in Cave Junction, OR. Mary moved from Philadelphia, PA to Dayton, OH in 1962 to continue her federal career at Desc. She began her federal career with the Naval Aircraft Factory from 1942 to 1944. She worked for the U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Army Electronics Material Agency from 1950 until she came to Desc in 1962. She was Chief of the Operations Division of the Defense Automatic Addressing Systems Office. She had been in data processing for 25 years. After 39 years of government service, she retired to enjoy herself taking cruises, exploring restaurants in the tri-state area and playing her harp, piano, organ and any other instrument that found its way into her self taught hands. As a registered book collector, her library was extensive and well rounded. She was also a life long advocate for cats and dogs. Her son moved her to Oregon after a stroke in 2002 to over see her care. Mary passed away peacefully while asleep. She is survived by her son, Michael and daughter-in-law, Kathie, her brother, Michael Rubillo, her grandsons, Nile and Gaelan Smith, and three great grand children, Sara, Ozzy, and Tristan. She will be greatly missed. Viewing 9:30 AM and services 10:30 AM will be held on Monday, July 11th at Saint Frances Catholic Church, 6245 Wilmington Pike, Centerville, Ohio. Interment at Calvary Cemetery. If you prefer, contributions can be made to the Humane Society for Dogs and Cats, 1661 Nicholas Rd., Dayton OH 45418 or an animal shelter of your choice.
