HOOG, Mary Jane (Mather), age 83, of Kettering, OH, passed away on Monday, August 19, 2024, at Hospice of Dayton.
Mary Jane was born March 11, 1941, in Louisville, KY, to the late Dr. Sylvester W. and Kitty S. Mather. Mary Jane graduated from duPont Manual High School in Louisville, class of 1959. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from the University of Louisville in 1963, a pioneering feat for women of that generation and a lifelong source of pride for her and inspiration for her family.
After graduation, she worked for a year as a research biochemist for the University of Louisville. She had a lifetime love of music, sports, reading, sewing, weaving, and needlework. She was an avid bicyclist with many cycling accomplishments, such as riding the Cardinal Trail and completing numerous century rides. She was a member of the Dayton Cycling Club, Adventure Cycling, Weaver’s Guild of Miami Valley, Little Loomhouse (Louisville), and the Kentucky Historical Society. She was a member of Harmony Creek Church (UCC).
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 50 years Tom Hoog, and sisters-in-law, Trudy Kimble (Steve) and Rose “Tootie” Mather (Innes). She is survived by her children, David (Susan) of Philadelphia, PA, and Ann (Scott Whipple) of Washington, DC; beloved grandchildren, Benji, Nina, William, Katy, and Ray; brothers Allen Mather (Ruth) of Tulsa, OK, and Innes Mather (Deena) of Louisville, KY; sister-in-law, Donna Rose (Dick); brothers-in-law, Gary Hoog and Steve Kimble; and several nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.
Family will greet friends on Friday, August 30, from 4-7pm at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering. Graveside service will be Saturday at 10:30am at David’s Cemetery, 4600 Mad River Rd., Kettering. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Mary Jane’s memory be made to cancer research (American Cancer Society) or the Arthritis Foundation.
