96, formerly of Northeast Harbor, ME and Siesta Key, FL, passed away September 12, 2000. Mary Louise was born in Dayton on December 12, 1904. She was preceded in death by her parents, John P. and Katherine Beckman Breen; her brothers, John and former Mayor Edward G. Breen; her niece, Becky Breen Frick; and her beloved husband, Robert E. Garrity. Mary Louise received degrees from Saint Mary of the Woods College, IN; the University of Cambridge, England; and the University of Paris. She was president of the Junior League of Dayton and regional director of Junior Leagues of America. She was author of the column ''By M.L.B.'' for the Dayton Journal in the forties. During WWII, she worked in Intelligence for the War Dept. in Washington, DC and then went to the Office of the Military Attaché in Madrid, Spain, as Intelligence Analyst. After the war, she was made director of Catholic War Relief Services in Spain, and then director of the Catholic War Relief Services in France. Mary Louise was also director of Volunteer Services for the Boston Catholic Charitable Bureau that met displaced persons from Europe and arranged transportation to their sponsors throughout the U.S. She was a member of the Architectural Committee of the Liturgical Commission of the Catholic Diocese of Portland, ME and was instrumental in building the Church of St. Peter in Manset, ME and the winter chapel of St. Ignatious in Northeast Harbor, ME. She was awarded the Medaille de St. Vincent de Paul in France and the Mundelein medal as outstanding lay Catholic woman in the United States. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Constance F. Breen of Dayton; numerous nieces and nephews, and many special friends. A memorial mass will be held in the fall.
