POWELL, McCray was born November 5th, 1942 to the late James and Blanche Powell in Somerville, TN. He entered to rest on Tuesday November 7th, 2017 at The Ohio State University Hospital. Preceding him in death are five brothers, four sisters and one grandchild.
McCray accepted Christ at an early age at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Somerville TN. He was nurtured in Christian home. McCray worked on the farm with his family before graduating from Fayette County Training School in 1963. In 1963 he moved to Chicago Illinois were he had several jobs. In 1969 McCray moved his family to Dayton OH where he found employment at Inland (GM) Corp. McCray owned and operated many prosperous businesses starting with Powells Market, Drexel Beer and Wine Drive Thru, and MP Trucking. Through his entrepreneurships he provided many job opportunities to his family and other members of the community.
McCray was a kind, humble, loving man who always kept a smile on his face and love in his heart. McCray loved traveling and visiting family and friends. Family was always first to him and he never met a stranger. McCray loved all sports with the Chicago Bulls, Bears, Cubs, White Sox and The Ohio State University as his favorite teams. McCray was united in Holy Matrimony in 1967 to Thenie Mahon and to this union two children were born. He also had one other daughter. In 2000, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Katherine Vinson.
McCray leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Katherine Vinson Powell, three loving daughters, Kim Powell of Dayton, Oh., Carla Powell of Kansas City Mo., and Chante Powell Harris of Dayton Oh. Step children Letitia (Donald), Dennis Vinson, of Cleveland Oh., three grandchildren, Reginald Williams Jr. of Kansas City Mo., Daniel Eason Jr., and Kendall Harris of Dayton Oh., one great-granddaughter Shaniyah Williams of Kansas City Mo., and special great-grandson Kai Smith of Dayton, Oh. Step-grandchildren, Ciji, Dennard, Pierese, Ronice, step-great grandchildren, Celio, and Case. Two loving sisters, Rosie Lee Jones and Otherlia Hall, both of Dayton Oh. sister -in-law, Barbara Powell of Lynwood, Il. A host of nephews, nieces, grand nephews and nieces and great grand nephews and nieces, close cousins and friends to mourn his passing. Devoted nephews William Lawrence Whitmore (Jeanette) and Gregory Powell (Diane) of Dayton Oh. Devoted ex-wife and friend Thenie Powell. Devoted employee and friend David Brown.
Siblings awaiting his arrival include: Estella, Theaphelus, James Henry, Primes, Pauline, Ralph, Earnestine, Ruth Ida, Annie B., Calvin, John Robert, and granddaughter Camille Williams. Special thanks to the staff at DaVita Dialysis Center of Dayton.
A visitation will be held from 11-1pm on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering. A Funeral Service will be at 1:00pm. Burial will be held at Shiloh Park Cemetery.
