MILDRED WEIDLE YOUNG, age 104, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2005 at Oak Creek Terrace Nursing Home, Kettering. A Lifelong resident of Montgomery County, she was born to George and Oca Weidle on April 25, 1901, lived on Dayton’s East Second Street in the 1913 flood, married Van Buren Township resident, Russell H. Young in 1919, brought up their family of five children on the family farm on Kettering’s Far Hills Ave. She was a faithful member of David’s Church for over ninety years, where she was choir director and served in many church and women’s guild activities. Her interest in education was manifested in PTA work as president of both Dorothy Lane and Fairmont High Schools where she championed the cause of hot lunches in the schools. Eventually she pursued her degree in education at the University of Dayton. She taught kindergarten at Greenmont and George L. Ernst Schools for many years, and was instrumental in founding the Kettering Classroom Teachers Association. In 1987, Mildred was inducted into the Chester A. Roush Educational Hall of Fame in Kettering. She was a local founder of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Centerville Grandmothers Club and charter member of Washington Township Seniors and the Centerville & Kettering Senior Citizen organizations. Preceded in death by her parents and brother, Vernie Weidle, her husband, Russell H. Young in 1978, sons, Russell G. Young in 1967 and Paul R. Young in 1990. Survivors include son, Roy M. Young and wife, Ruthann; daughters, Mary Ellen Hopkins and Norma Jean Hendricks and her husband, Bill; 10 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren and 3 great great granchildren. Visitation will be held from 12-2:00 PM Wednesday, March 16th at David’s United Church of Christ with a celebratory service of her life at David’s Church beginning at 2:00 PM at the church. Burial immediately following in the family plot in David’s Cemetery. If desired, friends may make contributions in her honor to the Memorial Fund of David’s Church, 170 W.
