Hock, Myrtle, age 82 of Centerville, OH, passed away on Friday, May 31, 2024.
A long-time member of the Morning Star Church community, Myrtle was born in Pineville, KY on January 2, 1942. She grew up in Wallins Creek (Harlan County), KY and was a member of Wallins Baptist Church. Myrtle spent time traveling with her parents, going to UK basketball games, supporting her high school as a cheerleader, and inviting friends to her family’s fishing cabin on Norris Lake. Myrtle went on to pursue her passion for education, earning her Bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Eastern Kentucky University. Myrtle’s teaching career took her to Cincinnati, where she met the love of her life, Gerald Hock. Together, they embarked on a journey that led them to Spartanburg, SC, Chicago, IL, where they welcomed daughter Lynn, Fort Wayne, IN, where son Perry soon followed, and eventually to Dayton, Ohio. Myrtle was a fabulous cook, excelling in dishes popular in the south. She was also a formidable card player who could hold her own in a multitude of games, but most especially bridge. After sending Perry to kindergarten, Myrtle was hired by the Centerville City School District and found fulfillment working as a teaching assistant, supporting kids with disabilities. Upon the birth of her grandson, Myrtle retired to pursue her true calling, which was being a granny. She was passionate about all sports, and supported a variety of teams including the Purdue Boilermakers, The Ohio State Buckeyes, the Reds, the Bengals, and most of all, her beloved Kentucky Wildcats. In addition to collegiate and professional sports, she attended countless sporting contests, concerts, and family events, as well as the events of her friends and their families. She was the official team granny of many teams!Myrtle enjoyed traveling abroad, cross country, to the family vacation spot at Norris Lake, and spending time at her condo in Florida, because not only did she get to see new places and meet new people, she was able to spend time with the people she loved. In recent years, Myrtle enjoyed canning beans, going to trivia, having lunch with friends, and spending time with her Joy group. Her warm presence and infectious laughter will be sorely missed by all who knew her. A celebration of Myrtle's life will be held at Routsong Funeral Home in Kettering, where friends and family can come together to share memories and pay their respects.
