Dascalos, Nicholas P., age 89, of Centerville, OH, passed away on Friday, November 29, 2024. Nick was born on August 21, 1935, to the late Peter and Olga Dascalos, in Des Moines, IA. He grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Roosevelt High School, class of 1953, before enlisting with the United States Navy. Nick served in the Korean War as a machinist mate, achieving the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class. During his enlistment with the Navy, he received commendations and medals for National Defense, China Service, and Good Conduct. In 1956 he was honorably discharged and shortly thereafter met his future wife and love of his life, Marlene Booth. While working and attending night classes Nick and Marlene started their family together in 1959. In 1964, he graduated from Drake University where he earned his B.S in Business Administration. Nick then began his long career in accounting. While working for Koering Crane Company, he made his way to Dayton, OH with his young family. After over 40 years of working as an accountant, he retired in 2005 from Enting Water Conditioning Inc. Nick was a lifelong sports fan. You would frequently see him attending his children’s sporting events, or watching a Buckeyes, Bengals, or Reds game from his favorite red recliner at home. He was an avid golfer and could often be found on the fairways leading up to the “19th hole” at Browns Run. Nick was always very proud of his Greek heritage. One of his fondest memories was his trip to Greece with two of his brothers. Nick always cherished the time with his family, whether it was the many family trips, grandchildren’s sporting events, or just simply being together. His witty humor, positive attitude, and fun-loving nature will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Nick is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bill, Chris, and Gus Dascalos; and grandchildren, Nicholas, and Cooper Dascalos.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Marlene Dascalos; children, Peter (Deb) Dascalos, Libby (Michael) Runge, Kathy (Jerry) Zahora , and Chuck Dascalos; grandchildren, Stazi Dascalos, Stephan Dascalos, Taylor (Courtney) Runge, Connor (Kelsie) Runge, Alex (Paulina) Runge, Grayson Zahora, Chloe Dascalos, Jillian Dascalos, and Phoebe Dascalos; great-grandchildren, Noelle and Levi Runge; and numerous extended family and friends.
A visitation will be held from 4 –6pm on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd. Kettering, OH 45429. Funeral service will be held at 10am on Friday, December 13, at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 500 Belmonte Park North, Dayton, OH 45405. Private family burial at Dayton National Cemetery on Monday, December 16, 2024. The family would like to thank the staff at Fairmont Senior Living of Washington Township and Ohio’s Hospice Foundation – Dayton Region for the exceptional care they provided Nick. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Nicholas Dascalos to Ohio’s Hospice Foundation-Dayton Region 7575 Paragon Rd. Dayton, OH 45459.
