FLANAGAN, Patrick (Pat) Fennessy, age 63, longtime Dayton businessman and proprietor of Flanagan's Pub on Stewart Street, passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at Hospice of Dayton with his family by his side. Known affectionately as "Our Benevolent Host", Pat had a knack and a passion for making people feel comfortable in his "little joint".
Born to George and Alice Flanagan, Pat was one of four children and graduated from Fairmont West High School. He had an avid interest in cars that led to his racing go karts as a youngster, Legend-class cars in his 40s and early 50s, and a love of all things NASCAR.
Pat entered the Dayton tavern scene in 1976 when Flanagan's Pub opened its doors. Originally "just" a bar with a game room toward the rear, Pat eventually modified the floor plan to include a kitchen that serves a wide variety of "pub grub", with an intense focus on good quality and friendly service.
The Pub has become a hub for various events in Dayton, including "St. PatROCK's Party" and the "Flyer Feedback" radio show. Active in the community, and always trying to be a "good neighbor", Pat partnered time and again with various local groups to host benefits and fundraisers for those in need. He was especially thankful for his relationship with the Dayton Firefighters and Dayton Police Department.
Pat and his wife Melissa married in 1993. They adopted their daughter Emma, now 15, in 1998, and their son Patrick, now 12, in 2001, both from Viet Nam. He is preceded in death by his sister, Kim Flanagan. Pat is survived by his wife and two children, brother Michael of Tampa, and twin sister Peggie (Jim) Flanagan-Schriner of Dayton.
A time to gather with family and friends to celebrate Pat's life will be from 1:00-9:00pm on Friday, December 27, 2013 at Flanagan's Pub, 101 East Stewart Street. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 1322 Brown St., Dayton, Ohio 45409.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the education fund for Emma and Patrick. Donations may be sent to the Friends of the Celtic Academy (FOCA), c/o The Celtic Academy of Irish Dance, 85 Woodman Drive, Riverside, Ohio 45431.
