LACOUTURE, Paul M. died on June 17, 2016 at Hospice of Dayton after a long illness. He was born in Dayton on June 18, 1949, the son of the late Paul E. Lacouture and Jeannette Kittredge Lacouture.
He grew up in Oakwood and attended the Oakwood schools. He graduated from The Salisbury School in Salisbury, CT in 1968. He attended Lake Forest College, where he started on both offense and defense on the varsity football team, and Wright State University, before graduating from the University of Dayton in 1977. He graduated from the University of Dayton School of Law, cum laude, in 1980. After law school he served in a number of judicial clerkships including clerkships with Judge William Wolff of the Montgomery County Common Pleas Court, Justice Robert Holmes of the Ohio Supreme Court, and The Honorable Walter H. Rice of the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Ohio. After the clerkships, he practiced law with several law firms in Dayton before returning as a career law clerk to Judge Rice in 1990. He retired from this position in 2012.
Paul had an encyclopedic knowledge of history, politics, current events, and sports. For a number of years he parlayed this knowledge into success (including several network championships) at the weekly Trivia Night at BW3 on Brown Street in Dayton. He enjoyed sailing, sports, reading, and his extended family. He was a civil war buff, an avid environmentalist, and a rabid Reds fan. Paul demonstrated a love of and devotion to the law throughout his career and was well-respected for his legal scholarship.
He was a member of the Buz Fuz Club in Dayton and a long-time board member and president of Building Bridges, also in Dayton.
Paul is survived by his siblings, Peter (Marnie) of Exeter, RI, Linda Vliet (Walter) of Denver, CO, Helen (Kevin Newmark) of Brookline, MA, Anne Penniman (George) of Essex, CT, and his Swedish brother Anders Ekernas (Mariann) of Cos Cob, CT. He also leaves behind ten nieces and nephews, an aunt, two uncles and many cousins. He had a large circle of loyal, loving, lifetime friends who will miss him greatly. Paul's family appreciates the care and support provided to him for many years by Dr. Siva Ambalavanan.
A memorial service celebrating Paul's life will be held in the Fall at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 33 W. Dixon Ave., Oakwood.
