BERLO, Phyllis Louise (Jones) passed away on January 17, 2024, at the age of 96. Born on October 27, 1927, in Dayton, Ohio, Phyllis was a remarkable woman whose presence touched the lives and hearts of many.
Phyllis was a graduate of Wilbur Wright High School. She married LaVergne E. Berlo in 1946. Phyllis had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and an insatiable curiosity. Though she did not obtain a degree, her commitment to learning never wavered. She immersed herself in the world of mathematics, dedicating her time to translating complex mathematical concepts into Braille, ensuring that the blind community had access to this essential knowledge. Her devotion to accessibility will forever be appreciated.
Apart from her intellectual pursuits, Phyllis had a creative streak that manifested in her vibrant artwork. She was an accomplished artist, using various mediums to convey the beauty she saw in the world. Phyllis had a unique talent for painting intricate designs on delicate eggs, showcasing her attention to detail and patience.
Phyllis found solace in simple pleasures. She enjoyed spending time in nature, particularly bird watching. Phyllis also cultivated a stunning collection of orchids, tending to them with care and nurturing their growth. She was an avid reader of non-fiction, particularly on the subject of Physics. She also delved into many religious texts.
Phyllis was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother. She is preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband LaVergne E. Berlo; sons, Michael and Mark Berlo, and Mark’s partner, Jane; and brother-in-law Donald. She leaves behind cherished memories in the hearts of her grandsons, Christopher and wife Meghan, and Benjamin and wife Emily Berlo; sister, Judith; niece, Mandy and husband Mike, and niece Amy; daughter-in-law, Sue, and good friend Janice. Her devotion to family was unwavering, and she shared many memorable moments and experiences with her loved ones.
In this challenging time, we come together to celebrate the life and legacy of Phyllis Louise Berlo. A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm February 2, 2024, at Woodland Cemetery, located at 118 Woodland Ave., Dayton, OH 45409.
Phyllis Louise Berlo will forever be remembered for her thirst for knowledge, her artistic talents, her love for nature, and her devotion to family.
