age 83, of Oakwood, died Saturday, July 28, 2001. He was a graduate of Purdue University and the University of Louisville, College of Medicine. Alan served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corp. during World War II. He was a general surgeon in Dayton for 39 years. Alan was Chief Resident of Miami Valley Hospital, a Fellow of the Cleveland Clinic and on staff at Miami Valley Hospital and Kettering Medical Center. He was a member of the Montgomery County Medical Society, American Medical Association, Dayton Country Club, 39ers, Slagel Trout Club and St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Alan was an avid fly fisherman and loved fishing with his family and friends. Survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara (Shoemaker); daughters, Judy Turner and her husband, John, Janet Dues and her husband, John of VA; grandchildren, Jeff and Teri Turner, Carrie and Shawn Dan, Elizabeth, John, Jr., and Christopher Dues; and great grandchildren, Brendon and Lauren Turner; brother, Franklin Fanning and his wife, Jane; sisters, Phyllis Becker and Jean Radclifffe and her husband, Lynn; sister-in-law, Susie Shoemaker; and caregivers, Pat Raines, Julie Sigmund, Cindy Henry and Charlene Wilkins. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 33 West Dixon Ave., Oakwood, with the Rev. Melody Williams officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering. Private burial will be in Twin Valley Cemetery.
