Randall Robert Thompson “Randy”, age 47, died peacefully in his sleep on March 19, 2025 at Hospice of Dayton, with his family by his side, his yearlong battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig Disease) and accompanying Frontal temporal Dementia (FTD) concluded.
Randall is survived by his wife, Masako Thompson (Yatsuki); his children, Maya and Kayla; his mother and stepfather, Tanya Thompson Frantz and Michael H. Frantz; mother and father-in-law Nahoko and Masaaki Yatsuki; his sister Jannelle Pajari (Chad); nieces, Alissa and Sydney; brother, Robert Thompson (Carlos). Other survivors include stepsisters, Stacey Bales (Scott) and son Ross, Natalie Schindler (Dave) and their daughters Payton and Allie; sisters, Pamela Thompson and Cheryl Smith; and brother, Bruce Thompson, and his sons, Bruce Jr. and Eric.
Additional survivors include Masako’s family; brother-in-law, Keisuke (WanHi), their children Mio and Yohei; and sister-in-law, Yoshiko Yatsuki.
Randall is survived by extended family that includes several aunts, uncles, and many cousins. Also surviving is his best friend since high school Eric Faulkner.
Randall was preceded in death by his father, Robert S. Thompson Jr.; and by several grandparents, Robert Sr. and Verda Thompson, Richard L. Syx, Carol McCormack Arentz, Cyril O. and Helena W. Frantz; great-grandmother, Pauline Bradley; and cousin Jesse Syx.
Randall was born on October 27, 1977, in Dayton, Ohio. During his formative years he attended school in Fairborn, Ohio until moving to Centerville prior to his senior year. He graduated from Centerville H.S. in the class of 1996.
Randall attended Indiana University, returning home one semester short of obtaining his business degree. Strongly influenced by parental direction, the sought after degree was gained the following December. Then, asking how long he could live at home and receiving the reply “3 months”. Randall, within two weeks began work at Enterprise, found an apartment and moved out.
Masako became a bright light in his life, and they married on February 6, 2006, in a second ceremony on October 14, 2006, for his family and for a 3rd time in a traditional Japanese wedding ceremony when visiting her family in Japan.
Employed with Fifth Third Bank Randall and Masako moved to Dublin, Ohio where he attended nursing school and Masako worked at Honda. After receiving his RN degree Randall worked for Ohio State University Medical Center. While at OSUMC Randall became involved with IT, attended the EPIC campus and helped usher in the EPIC program at hospitals in Columbus. He later worked for Ohio Health.
Seeking a different lifestyle in which to raise their children, Randall and Masako eventually moved to Maine. There he and Masako both worked for MaineHealth. They were Maine residents for approximately a year and a half prior to Randall receiving the diagnosis of ALS, at which time they returned to Centerville to be closer to family.
Randall always said he wanted children and he and Masako “finally” started their family in 2014. They were raising two beautiful girls, who take after their father in so many ways. His quick wit, sense of humor, and that little bit of orneriness that he kept all of his life is within them.
Randall was a very “hands on” family man. Housework, cooking, keeping the yard, changing diapers, playing with the kids, Randall saw it all as being a good husband and father, and undertook his part as a willing partner. Each Friday night would find him, Maya and Kayla holding their own “sleepover” in their living room, complete with tents, video games, movies and, of course, all the good snacks.
Randall loved his family and life. He grabbed at it with gusto; if he thought he might like something, he tried it. As a youth (and even occasionally as an adult) he enjoyed skateboarding. He was one who exercised and stayed active by rock climbing, fishing, blacksmithing, biking, hiking, kayaking and his favorite, golfing. His varied interests included beer and wine making, even though, we joked that his own favorite, Stella Artois, was a nonalcoholic beer. Following the footsteps of his carpenter ancestors he did woodworking, making beautiful furniture, picture frames, flower boxes, and stools for the girls.
Randall was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig disease) in February of 2024 and FTD (Frontal Temporal Dementia) in July of 2024. Throughout the year since his diagnosis, he never gave up fighting, determined that he could beat it.
In this last year Randall developed a taste for sweets. Even though ALS had taken away his ability to properly swallow he ate chocolate cake the way chocolate cake should be eaten. Randall was loved dearly and will be missed so much by so many.
Our hearts are broken. Until we meet again Randall/Randy!
