Richard ''Dick'' S. Harmer Iii

September 14, 1941 — July 16, 2001

age 59, of Kettering, died Monday, July 16, 2001 in Dayton. He received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Ceramic Engineering at the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana). While a graduate student at the University of Illinois, Dick managed the university's electron microscope lab. Upon graduation, he came to the University of Dayton where he set up and managed the electron microscope lab, taught materials engineering and worked on various contracts throughout the research institute. He also taught university courses in astronomy and was the school's Radiation Safety Officer. As a former Eagle Scout, Dick was active his entire life in the Scouting program. He strongly supported a boy's involvement in merit badges and progress at summer camps. As an active volunteer and officer of the Miami Valley Astronomical Society, Dick worked with adults and youth at the Dayton Museum of Natural History, the observatory at John Bryan State Park, the Kettering Schools and Kettering Adult School. In recent years, Dick became a mainstay of the Harmer Association's genealogy group. An avid gardener, he received a Kettering beautification award. Preceded in death by his father, Richard Sharpless Harmer, Jr., he is survived by his wife of 35 years, Sharon; a son, Michael Eric Harmer (Shelly) and granddaughter, Amber Renee; a daughter, Katherine Michelle Harmer; mother, Ruth Wiseman; a brother, David Harmer (Karen); 2 sisters, Darlene Jackson (Jim) and Dianne Stark (Bill); and many other special and loved family members and friends. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday at Miami Valley Unitarian Fellowship, 2001 Far Hills Ave., Oakwood with Rev. Richard Venus officiating. The family will greet friends from 4-7:00 P.M., Wednesday in the Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Dick Harmer Memorial Scouting Fund, c/o Sharon Harmer, 4849 Arrowhead Dr., Kettering OH 45440.
