BAUMHARDT, Richard E., 87, of Dayton, Ohio passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2009 at Bethany Village. Born on April 28, 1921 in Elyria, Ohio. He was the youngest son of the late Nelson and Lenore (Gawn) Baumhardt; brother of the late Nelson Baumhardt and sister, Mildred DuCoty. Richard graduated from Elyria High School in 1939, where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball. He graduated in 1947 from Miami University of Ohio, with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, a concentration in Business, and lettered on the Varsity baseball team. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. For 22 years he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta House Corporation, serving several years as its president. He was National President of the Miami University Alumni Association and served as President of the School of Business Advisory Council. During World War II, he served as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps (6th Marine Division) stationed in the South Pacific. Richard was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during combat on Okinawa and became part of the occupation forces in Japan. He married Carolyn Sever on August 15, 1948 at St. Paul Methodist Church in Eaton, Ohio. Richard worked for various companies including: Standard Register as Employment Manager, General Tire & Rubber Company as Head of Sales Personnel International, and Harris Corporation as a Corporate Officer in Human Resources. He had a successful consulting business in human resource development which led to his final corporate position with the Iams Company as Director of Human Resources. An avid golfer, Richard earned the nickname "Boomer" from his long drives on many fairways throughout the United States. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Carolyn (Sever) Baumhardt of Centerville, OH, daughter Betsy Wacker (Watts) Westport, CT, son Bruce Baumhardt (Patti) Eden Prairie, MN, son Mark Baumhardt (Kathleen) West Chester, OH, and daughter Anne Bowles (Eric) Wooster, OH. Grandchildren: Cal and Lee Wacker (CT), Adam and Alex Baumhardt (MN), Kara and Meghan Baumhardt (OH). Sister-in-law Jane (Sever) Heywood (Dayton, OH). Nieces: Hope (Baumhardt) Stetler and Sue (Baumhardt) Innes (OH), Laura Heywood and Sara (Heywood) Kennedy (AZ). Nephews: Scott Heywood (WY) and Robert DuCoty (GA). Memorial contributions may be made to the Miami University Alumni Association, Murstein Alumni Center, 725 East Chestnut St., Oxford, OH 45056; Normandy United Methodist Church, 450 W. Alex Bell Road, Centerville, OH 45459; or The Benevolent Fund, Bethany Village-Graceworks Lutheran Services, 6445 Far Hills Ave. Centerville, OH 45459. The family thanks the nurses and staff of Bethany Village-BRC and Gardenview for their loving care. A memorial service to celebrate Richard's life will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at Normandy United Methodist Church, 450 W. Alex Bell Rd. Centerville, OH 45459 with Revs. David and Elizabeth Brown officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 AM to 11:30 AM with the memorial service to follow at 11:30 AM.
