MECKSTROTH, Robert C. (Bob), beloved husband & father, age 91 of Kettering passed away Thursday July 21, 2016 at Miami Valley Hospital.
Upon graduation from Fairmont High School in 1943, he served our country in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Ocean as the sole sailor in charge of radar, sonar, & communication on his ship, USS Bandera. Bob's college education began at the University of Cincinnati. After transferring, he received his bachelor's degree from Illinois Institute of Technology.
His career as an electrical engineer included working for IBM, NCR, and retiring from Hobart. He was a member of Kettering American Legion Post 598, Masonic Millennium Lodge 779, NCR REA, and the Lutheran Church of Our Savior for 59 years singing with the choir the majority of the time.
He enjoyed the bounty of his tomato crop, riding lawn mower, the beauty of the roses he nurtured, serving as videographer for the basketball teams coached by his son David & upon retirement from work, volunteering for over 20 years at We Care Arts in the woodshop.
His family was his greatest joy. Favorite family activities included vacationing together, doubles tennis, croquet, shooting pool, miniature golf, card & board games.
He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Minnie (Osterbrock) Meckstroth to whom he was born December 3, 1924 in Cincinnati - brother Walter and son John. Survived by his spouse of 65 years Wilma, whom he met as a chaperone for his former high school band's trip to Niagara Falls following his service in the Navy. Survived also by a son David of Kettering, daughter Carol of Las Vegas, grandson Nick of Cedar Park, Texas, brother Harry of Centerville, sister Marge McWilliams of Spokane, Washington as well as nieces & nephews.
Family will greet friends from 5-8 PM Monday, July 25, 2016 at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Road Kettering. Funeral service to be at 11 AM Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 155 E. Thruston Blvd. in Oakwood with Reverend Robert Willauer officiating. Burial in David's cemetery in Kettering.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lutheran Church of Our Savior, American Parkinsons Disease Association or Dayton Music Club.
