OWEN, Robert "Bob" E, age 95, born in Dayton, OH in 1921, passed away on July 2, 2016 at Bethany Lutheran Village in Centerville OH. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean Hinkson Owen, to whom he was married in 1946 until her death in 1978. He played varsity football (City Champions in 1939) and ran track at Fairview High School, graduating in 1939. He then attended Ohio Wesleyan University graduating in 1943 with a degree in finance/economics and was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. During World War II, Bob served as a corporal in the Army Air Forces weather squadron, 9th Air Force, 31st Air Transport Division, in England and France from 1943 to 1945.
Bob began his working career following the war as a CPA with Battelle & Battelle from 1946 to 1953. He ended his working career when he retired in 1986 after 33 years at Ledex Inc. as VP of Finance and Treasurer, and a member of the board of directors. Ledex was originally an innovative Dayton-based electronics company, acquired by Lucas Industries-England in 1983, and now doing business as Johnson Electric, a global electronics company. Bob enjoyed playing golf and tennis, watching the Cincinnati Reds, UD basketball and Ohio State football. He also loved gardening at his home in Oakwood as well as his villa at Bethany. Bob was a lifelong member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Ohio Society of CPAs. He served as a deacon at Fairmont Presbyterian Church and with several local organizations, including the Dayton Jaycees on the board of directors, the Oakwood YMCA as a board member and treasurer, the Hollinger Tennis Club as a board member and treasurer, and the local United Way and Red Cross organizations. Bob was also a longtime member of the Dayton Criterion Club and the Oakwood Centennial Club.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mabel Owen of Dayton and sister, Martha Owen Dohse. Bob is survived by his three children and their spouses, Caryl (John) Cowden of Millboro VA, Craig (Judy) Owen of Washington Twp OH, and Scott (Becky) Owen of Centerville OH. Bob is also survived by his five grandchildren, David, Kelly and Josh Cowden, and William and Clara Owen. Bob is also survived by brother-in-law, Joe Haacke; nephew, Jeff Dohse and niece, Suzy Goldman.
In his final years, Bob moved from Oakwood and resided at Bethany Village retirement community, where he greatly enjoyed his independent time in his villa and his very caring neighbors (especially Judy & Art) until his final passing.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 from 12 noon until 2pm, with a 2pm service, at Routsong Funeral Home's Centerville Chapel, 81 N. Main St, Centerville OH 45459, followed by burial in the family plot at Woodland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made in Bob's memory to Bethany Village, 6430 Inner Mission Way, Dayton, OH 45429 or to The Dayton Foundation for the Robert E. Owen Fund (a community needs-directed fund), 40 N. Main St, Dayton OH 45423.
