R. Alan Baker

BAKER, Roger Alan, age 88, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated physician, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2024, in Kettering, Ohio. Born on July 26, 1936, in Dayton, Ohio to the late Roger and Helen (nee Markley) Baker, who instilled in him the values of hard work and compassion from an early age. Alan graduated from Dartmouth College as part of the Class of 1958. He went on to graduate from the University of Cincinnati Medical School and serve his country with honor as a Captain in the United States Air Force before embarking on a distinguished career as an OB/GYN. For over three decades, he brought new life into the world and cared for countless families with unwavering dedication and kindness. His patients often remarked not only about his medical expertise but also about his genuine warmth and ability to listen—qualities that made him not just their doctor but also a trusted friend. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Alan was deeply devoted to his family. 

He is survived by his cherished wife Lois; daughter Rachel (Michael) Newman; son Jeff (Beth) Baker; and seven adoring grandchildren: John (Taylor) Baker; Aaron Baker; Joseph Baker; Sarah Baker; Anna Newman; Brigid Newman; Clare Newman. Each grandchild held a special place in Alan’s heart—he took immense joy in attending their events and celebrating their achievements. 

An avid sportsman throughout his life, Alan found great pleasure in fishing with his family and attending sporting events with his family and friends. Whether it was playing catch or sharing stories while golfing - the moments spent outdoors were some of his happiest memories. The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Carlyle House for their compassionate care during this difficult time as well as Ohio Living Bethany Hospice for providing support that allowed Alan’s final days to be filled with dignity surrounded by love. As we remember Roger Alan Baker—a man whose legacy will live on through those he touched—we celebrate not only what he accomplished professionally but more importantly how he loved fiercely and lived fully every day until the end. His spirit will forever remain alive within our hearts.

A visitation will be held from 4-5pm on Friday, January 10, 2025 at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering, OH 45429, with a funeral service to follow at 5pm. Private family burial at Woodland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
