ANDERSON (FALLANG), Ruth "Sue" Yarnnelle, age 88, of Centerville, passed away on January 3, 2011.
She was born in Celina, Ohio to Dennis S. and Grace Y. (Reed) Springer. Sue was a graduate of Celina High School and attended Miami University until her father's death required her to leave school and help support her mother and younger siblings.
In April, 1943 she became the first woman from Mercer County to enlist in the newly created women's Naval division, the W.A.V.E.S. She served in the U.S. Navy during WWII attaining the rank of Radioman, Second Class. Some of her favorite memories of this time were the honor of meeting Madame Chiang Kai-shek and teaching Morse code to the son of General Charles deGaulle.
While stationed in New Orleans, she met and married fellow Naval radioman Orviel W. Fallang. She continued her education, taking courses during her military deployments and finally received her BA in Education from Miami University in 1950. She earned a Masters in Education at Ohio State University while teaching at Fishinger Elementary School and supporting her family of four while her husband attended the Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine.
Upon his graduation in 1955, the family moved to Centerville and established the Far Hills Animal Hospital. Sue taught at Rose E. Miller Elementary School until 1960 when the first of her two daughters was born. In addition to raising her four children, she assisted her husband in the operation of the animal hospital until his untimely death in 1970. She was then married to Nels E. Anderson, Sr. from 1972 until his death in 1987.
Sue was a long-time member of The Lutheran Church of Our Savior. She was a life-long learner who loved to travel, read, and collect sea shells, nesting dolls, and antiques. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and volunteered for many years in support of the Dayton Horse Show. In 2007 she and her family donated a rare facsimile edition of the Book of Kells to Washington-Centerville Public Library in memory of her husband, Dr. Orviel Fallang.
She is preceded in death by her first husband Orviel W. Fallang, D.V.M.; second husband, Nels E. Anderson, Sr. ; sister, Helen Cato; brothers, Joe and Jim Springer.
Sue is survived and deeply missed by sons Dennis J. (Linda) Fallang, J.D. of Centerville and David J. (Lynn) Fallang M.D. of Middletown; daughters Michelle Y. "Chelley" (Matt) Patterson, Ph.D. of Snoqualmie, WA and Jennifer L. (Mike) Bell, M.D. of Morehead City, NC; grandchildren, Kirstin, Ragan, Ethan and Carsen Fallang, Sam and Jessica Patterson and Noah, Grace and Emily Bell; sister, Estella "Mic"(Don) Richards and numerous nieces, nephews, and step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will take place on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 1:00PM at Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 155 E. Thruston, Oakwood. Family will greet friends 12:00-1:00PM also at the church. Interment will be in Woodland Cemetery.
