Ruthanna D. Spears

SPEARS (Brown), Ruthanna D., age 93, formerly of Dayton, Vandalia and New Madison, Ohio, passed away Sunday, August 8, 2010. She was a graduate of New Madison High School in 1934 and received her degree in business from Miami-Jacobs College in 1936. Ruthanna was a member of the Universalist Church and the Fort Black Chapter of the Eastern Star and she was an avid supporter of the Dayton Antioch Shrine. Ruthanna served as the Treasurer of the Board of Education for both the New Madison and Vandalia-Butler school systems. After her retirement in 1977 she served as State Auditor for the State of Ohio Board of Education, first examining and then correcting financially troubled school systems throughout Ohio. Additionally, she served her industry as a board member, officer and past president of the Ohio School Retirement Organizations S.E.R.O. and O.A.P.S.E. into the mid 1990's. Ruthanna was an enthusiastic national and international traveler for both business and pleasure. Preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Cloda Duffield; first husband, Paul E. Brown; and second husband, Fred Spears. Ruthanna is survived by her son, Jack Brown and his wife Karen; grandchildren, Jeffrey and Nicole; and great-grandchildren, Shayne and Nicklaus. Funeral service will be held on Friday, August 13, 2010 at 12 Noon at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering, OH.
