Suzanne Scutt

February 11, 1930 — July 6, 2001

''Suzy'', age 71 of Centerville, OH passed away on July 6, 2001 at Southview Hospital after a brief illness. Suzy was born in Traverse City, Michigan on February 11, 1930 but grew up on Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee, always remaining proud of her Southern upbringing. After Graduation from the Girls Preparatory School in Chattanooga, she studied music and piano at the University of Cincinnati Music Conservatory (1951) where she fell in love with her husband, violinist William R. Scutt. She achieved her Masters of Arts in Music at the University of Illinois (1954). She was a lifetime member of Delta Omicron sorority and the PEO Sisterhood. She had been very active musically at Westminster Presbyterian Church since first joining in 1954. A Deaconess at Westminster, she had led the Children's Choir, sang in the church choir, played in the Bell Choir, and was always ready to assist in instrumental accompaniment during special programs. Suzanne was a gifted piano instructor, teaching both privately and as one of the initial faculty members at the Wright State School of Music from which she retired after 21 years. Suzy was an adjudicator for the National Piano Guild and the Ohio Music Educator's Association, and was one of the founding members of the South Dayton Piano Guild. In recent years, as a ''snowbird'' in Sarasota, FL, she loved to identify the palms and the flowers, and to add yet another colorful bird species to her ''life list''. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and, perhaps, the joy and generosity of her life can best be measured by the love of her husband, son, daughter, son-in-law and grandsons. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Muriel (Knox) Schmidt, and her brother Lewis Schmidt, MD. She is survived by her husband and partner in music, William R. Scutt, with whom she would have celebrated 50 years of marriage on August 18, 2001; son, David Scutt, Mason, OH; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Tom Duffee, Springfield, OH; grandsons, Robin and Asa Duffee; sister-in-law, Joan Schmidt, Gallipolis, OH; nephew and nieces, Lewis Schmidt, New Orleans, LA; Catherine Sandhage, Columbus, OH; Laura Schmidt, Cleveland Heights, OH; Lisa Schmidt, Columbus, OH; several cousins, including most especially Frederick Schmidt, Zellwood, FL; and many dear church and musical friends in the greater Dayton community. Visitation will be held at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Road, Kettering from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 9. Private burial services will take place at David's Cemetery. A public memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, the Reverend Kay Davis-Dudding officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Music Fund at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 125 N. Wilkinson St., Dayton, OH 45402.
