Thomas H. Gillaugh, 92, of Kettering, formerly of Oakwood, passed away February 1, 2017. He was born April 20, 1924 in Dayton, Ohio, to Huber W. "Whitey" and Mary (Olinger) Gillaugh. Tom graduated from Fairview High School and received his B.A. from Dartmouth College in 1946. He attended Dartmouth's Amos Tuck School for an additional year of graduate work in business administration. He began his business career with the National Cash Register Company and was later affiliated with the National Newark and Essex Bank in New Jersey. He returned to Dayton to work at the Dayton Chamber of Commerce before joining John Hancock's Dayton office in 1948. Tom founded the Thomas H. Gillaugh Agency and was named the New England Mutual Life Insurance Company (NEL) Dayton Agency Manager in 1952. He was soon appointed General Agent. He was a member and past president of the Dayton Chapter of the Society of Financial Service Professionals, the Estate Planning Council of Dayton, and the Ohio Heritage Life and Health Insurance Company (founding board). Attaining his Charter Life Underwriter (CLU) designation, Tom was a Life Member of Leaders, a member of the Hall of Fame, and received the National Quality Award 32 times. In 1963, he was named General Agent of the Year by Dayton GAMA, and his agency won the company's President's Trophy in 1966.
Tom was past director, Dayton Association of Life Underwriters and Oakwood YMCA; past president, Dayton Chapter of CLUs, Dayton GAMA, Dayton Dartmouth Alumni Association, Dartmouth Class Secretaries Association, and Dayton Bicycle Club; trustee, Dayton Children's Medical Center and Dayton Boys and Girls Club (President); member, Dayton Country Club, Rotary Club, Agonis Club, Dayton Bicycle Club (President), Beta Theta Pi, the Masonic Lodge, 39er's Men's Club, BACS, and Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Tom was preceded in death by parents Huber W. and Mary (Olinger) Gillaugh, brother Huber W. (Ingeborg) Gillaugh; wives Allabelle Binkley Gillaugh (41 years) and Eileen Gowdy Gillaugh (6 years). He is survived by wife, Nancy (Dilts) Gillaugh, daughter Gwendolyn G. (Ginger), son-in-law Robert Stoecklein (Tucson); grandchildren Mary L. Stoecklein (Tucson) and Robert T. Stoecklein (Denver); brother S. Bradley Gillaugh (Chicago); and step-children Elizabeth Hardy (Rick Omlor) (Dayton), Laura Hardy (Los Angeles), and Stephen Hardy (Columbus).
A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church February 18, 2017 at 11:00am with a visitation to follow at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Carillon Historical Park, Dayton Children's Medical Center, Camp Kern, or the charity of your choice.
