HINDERS, Urban A., 88, of Kettering, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2015. Urban was a graduate of Immaculate Conception High School in Celina, OH. He continued his education through the Navy V-12 program graduating with a B.S. Aeronautical Engineering (University of Notre Dame, '48). Urban secured a MS in Political Science from George Washington University (1972) and graduated from the National War College in the same year. In addition, he completed the Executive Management Seminar which led to his status as a charter member of the Senior Executive Service.
Urban served in the Navy until his discharge in 1948 and the Navy Reserve in 1952. He was subsequently discharged from the Air Force Reserve in 1955 as a 2nd Lieutenant. Urban culminated his government service in 1982 as the Chief Systems Engineer on the A-10 aircraft having previously worked on several additional military aircraft as well as serving as a senior U.S. member to a NATO evaluation team and collaboration with British and Australian teams during the development and deployment of the F-111.
In retirement, He devoted his time to woodworking and creating furniture and heirlooms for his children and grandchildren.
Urban is preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Emma (Pax) Hinders; his brother, John; and sister, Louise. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Doris (DeWyze) of South Bend, IN; his children, Judi (Rich, deceased), Rod (Laura) of Troy, OH, Brian (Diane) of Bellbrook, OH, Anita (Bob) of Arlington, VA, and Kevin (Mary) of Champaign, IL; 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Mary Rutledge of Englewood, OH, Marita Pitsick (Gene) of northeast Ohio, and brother, Fr. Joe Hinders C.P.P.S of Carthagena, OH.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 4500 Ackerman Blvd., Kettering. Family will greet friends two hours before the service.
A special thank you goes out from the family to the caring health care professionals at Kettering Hospital 3rd Floor East and the nursing staff of Hospice of Dayton. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Hospice of Dayton and the staff that made a difference.
