Violet Marie Blowers-Stamm left this earthly life in the late afternoon of Saturday, December 18, 2010 to fly to heaven with the angels.
Vis parents, Fred R. and Daisy Westenbarger Weller along with brother Harvey and sisters Eleanor Appleton, Beatrice Patterson Thomas and Freda Jenkins Ludinich Lindholm preceded her in death.
One sister, Elizabeth Myers of Zanesville, Ohio survives as do nephews Jeffrey and John Jenkins, Steven Gregory Ludinich, Chris and Eric Lindholm and one niece, Joan E. Ludinich Barker.
Vis first love was Emmett (Mutt) Blowers with whom she enjoyed over forty years of marriage until his death in 1981. They were together for years before marriage as they grew up in White Cottage and East Fultonham, Ohio. Her second marriage to Les Stamm ended when Les passed away in 1988.
Vi was born October 15, 1919 near Zanesville, Ohio and lived on a farm near East Fultonham where she attended elementary school. I slept in a converted closet and sometimes rode a pony to school. Vi was the only of the sisters who graduated from high school-Zanesvilles Lash High School. Vi travelled with Mutt to Connecticut and learned much of her lifetime skill as a seamstress there while he served as a submariner in World War II.
After the war, they settled in Fairborn, Ohio in a small home which they built themselves. Vi used her sewing skills for many years to make her own and many of Mutts articles of clothing. Many jobs were completed using only the measurements of the intended wearer and no or very few patterns. This was especially true in her last several, active years in producing suits, jackets and even flight suits as a government employee for the Thunderbird pilots and President Reagan. Vi worked several years as a seamstress at Wright Field near Dayton. During her many years of sewing she did a lot of work for individuals who knew of her skill.
At age forty-nine, Vi began her flight training for her greatest love. That was the love of flying. She became licensed as a commercial pilot, obtained her seaplane rating and eventually owned her own plane. She also became one of the owners of a private airport in New Carlisle, Ohio. Vi participated in several airplane races and won numerous awards in single and pair events. She was a member of the Ninety Niners, a womens pilots organization. This past summer Vi was honored as an Air and Space Leader and received a place on the National Air & Space Museums Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center on the Wall of Honor at the Air and Space Museum in the Dulles International Airport. One of Vis friends, a fellow lady pilot, Jeane Wolcott was instrumental in recognizing Vi with this award.
Vi was by far the most adventurous and daring of her sisters and her brother and indeed of her nephews, niece and great nephews and nieces. Not only is she a nationally recognized lady pilot and seamstress but also as the local pilot who drove manual shift automobiles. The last being a red, BMW two seater convertible.
