PETTIT, Walter A., age 99, of Centerville, passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at St. Leonard. Walter graduated from Hamilton High School and joined the USAF upon graduation, serving in WWII as a P-47 fighter pilot. He was an active volunteer for the City of Kettering, including Kettering-Oakwood Exchange Club for over 20 years, acting as President of the Kettering Sister Cities Association, volunteering at the Fraze Pavilion, and he was the 1996 Grand Marshal for the Kettering Holiday at Home Parade. Walter also volunteered for the Schuster Center for the Performing Arts, the Victoria Theater, and Memorial Hall. He was a member of the 367 Fighter Group, Miami Valley Military Affairs Association, and volunteered at the Wright Patt Air Force Museum. Walter also volunteered for both Five Rivers Metro Parks and Greene County Parks, which allowed him to enjoy the outdoors he loved so much. He loved to go for walks and was especially fond of bird watching. During his time at St. Leonard, he was an active volunteer for the Franciscan Center, special events, and always busy making cards for the residents at St. Leonard. Walter was an exceptional wood carver, but nothing made him happier than to go on vacations and cruises with his family. Sanibel Island in Florida was his favorite destination. Walter will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Lois Pettit; his brothers, Clarence and Marvin Pettit; and his parents, Walter E. and Stella Mae (Holcraft) Pettit. Walter is survived by his daughter, Amy (Tim) Cloud; granddaughters, Carrie (Rob) Hauck, and Stacy Cloud; and great-grandson, Max Hauck.
