age 88, of Oakwood, passed away Monday, July 5, 2004. He was born in Millbrook, New York, September 5, 1915. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Agnes Hughes; brother, Lloyd Hughes; son, David Evan Hughes and his wife of 63 years, Jean Smith Hughes. Living most of his life in New Jersey, Walter worked for Bankers Trust Company in NYC for 40 years, starting as a messenger and retiring as a vice president. He was very active in the Episcopal Church serving as a vestryman and warden at St. Peter’s in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, where he lived with his family for many years and where he also served on the town council. Walter and Jean retired to Hilton Head, South Carolina in 1977 where they had many wonderful years with friends, golf and travel. In 2002, they moved to Dayton, Ohio. Walter will be missed by his son, Tom and wife, Carol of Golden, Colorado; daughter, Laurie Leach and husband, David of Dayton; grandchildren, Keri Hughes of Portland, Oregon, David Hughes of Denver, CO, Megan McCann and husband John of Dayton, Katie Brennaman and husband, Jim and great-grandson, Zachary of Beavercreek, OH. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM, Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 125 N. Wilkinson St., Dayton with Rev. Miriam Lawrence Leupold officiating. Family will receive friends following the memorial service in the West Parlor of the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Miami Valley Chapter, The Laurelwood, 3797 Summit Glen Dr., Ste. 100 Dayton, OH 45449.
