BAIN, Warren “Lee” III, age 69, of Fairborn, passed away at Hospice of Dayton on Saturday, May 29, 2004. Lee was a 1958 graduate of Vanderbilt University where he received his B.S. and a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked as an Aerospace Engineer with Wright Patterson Air Force Base for 42 years. At WPAFB Lee was an internationally recognized expert in the area of high-speed air breathing propulsion. His early career began in the development of ramjet engines and he was an expert in the difficult technology of ground testing such systems. Lee also contributed to the development of scramjet propulsion for aerospace vehicles and missiles. In recent years he pioneered the emerging applications of plasma technologies in the aerodynamic and propulsion of high-speed aerospace systems. He was dedicated to coordinating the manifold research efforts of the international community in this area, and to this end he originated an annual series of “weakly ionized gas” workshops under the auspices of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. His pioneering international efforts in this area were recognized by the award of an honorary Doctor of Sciences degree from Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia in 1999. Survived by his wife of 47 years, Ann; son, Brian Lee Bain of Fairborn; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Bain of Huber Heights; granddaughter, Roquel Bain of Springfield; sister, Nancy Tarnoff of Rockville, MD. Lee’s family will greet friends on Sunday, June 6 from 2-5pm at the Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering.
