William Dininger Lockwood

LOCKWOOD, William D., of Oakwood passed away Saturday, May 27, 2017 at the age of 82. He was born in Chicago in 1934 to Chalmer and Mary Lockwood. The family moved to Dayton during his childhood where he was raised. Bill Lockwood was a prominent Dayton-based Civil Engineer, entrepreneur and mentor. His passion for innovation and the ability to develop new technologies and bring them to market led to 17 patents. He founded five nationally recognized companies: W.D. Lockwood Consulting Engineers in 1966; Lockwood, Jones and Beals, Inc. (LJB) in 1972; CON/STEEL Building Systems that pioneered design/build tilt-up construction in the Midwest in 1982; CON/SPAN Bridge Systems in 1985 which provided aesthetically designed precast bridges throughout the US through BridgeTek, LLC in 1994, a company Bill co-founded with Miller-Valentine. The bridge technology was licensed internationally in Canada and Japan. Over 10, 000 CON/SPAN bridges have been installed in the US and internationally. Lockwood's significant contributions to the civil engineering and construction industry spanned over five decades and resulted in many industry recognitions including Fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers, Fellow Member Award from the Engineer's Club of Dayton, Member of the Governing Board of the Engineering Science Foundation of Dayton, Member of the Materials and Processes Business Development Committee, and Miami Valley Economic Development Coalition. He was a member of the Civil Engineering Research Foundation in Washington DC. Bill Lockwood held Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. The University honored Bill with a Distinguished Alumni Award and established an endowment to build the William D. Lockwood Graduate Student Study Room and support the Lockwood Scholarship for UC Civil Engineering students. Bill met the love of his life and wife, Jacqueline "Jackie" at the University of Cincinnati. Together, Bill and Jackie tirelessly developed ideas and programs in support of Bill's companies, the Dayton Arts, and they established the not-for-profit Lockwood Foundation to expand their philanthropic reach. Bill enjoyed mentoring engineering students and entrepreneurs in developing their ideas. He supported the University of Dayton national bridge competition and was passionate about the progress of the Dayton Early College Academy (DECA) program to prepare underserved kids for college. Most of all, Bill loved spending time with his family. He and Jackie organized frequent family adventures to share experiences and they celebrated any opportunity to gather together. Bill's passion for flying was fulfilled when he obtained a pilot's license at the age of 70 and purchased a Cessna 182. Bill Lockwood was preceded in death by his parents Chalmer and Mary, his brother George and his sister-in-law Janice. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Jackie, sister Mary Dean and brother-in-law James Dean, brother-in-law Roger Shetterly and his wife Barbara, daughter Dr. Jane Lynch and her husband Jim and grandsons JB and William Lockwood Lynch of San Antonio, TX; son Jim and his wife Jane Ann and granddaughters Kelly and Rachel Lockwood of Boulder, CO; and son John Lockwood, Ph.D. and his wife Robyn of Palo Alto, CA. Memorial services for friends and family of Bill will be held at Westminster Church, 125 N. Wilkinson St, Dayton, OH 45402 at 11 am on Saturday, June 17th. A reception will immediately follow at Dayton Country Club, 555 Kramer Rd, Dayton, OH 45419 in Oakwood.
