William E. Chalfant

CHALFANT, William E. age 85, devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away March 9, 2011 at his home in Dayton, surrounded by loving family and friends. Bill is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marian (McNary) Chalfant; two daughters Marilyn Chalfant (Norman Luxemburg) of New York City and Dr. Virginia C. (William) Wood of Dayton; two grandsons Christopher (Lauren) Wood and Daniel Wood; great-granddaughter Madison Wood; sister Sara Wilson, brother Archie Chalfant, and many nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his sister Leona. Bill was born July 4, 1925 in Eighty-Four, Pennsylvania, to the late Cecil and Bessie (Leyda) Chalfant. Named after grandfather Rev. William Parker Chalfant, D.D., a United Presbyterian missionary who served in Shantung, China, Bill was the eldest of four children growing up on a small farm. He graduated from Trinity High School, Washington, Pennsylvania. He later obtained a degree in Business Administration from Penn Commercial College. Bill was a proud World War ll veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater from 1943 to 1946 where he was a sonarman with the U.S. Coast Guard on the USS PC 590. Bill lived most of his life in McMurray, Pennsylvania. He worked thirty-five years for Mellon Bank of Pittsburgh, retiring as an officer in 1985. He was a member of Peters Creek Presbyterian Church and also served as a volunteer at St. Clair Hospital. After moving to Dayton in 1990 he dedicated many hours to volunteer work at Miami Valley Hospital. He was an active member of Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church and an ordained Presbyterian Elder and Deacon. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, gardening, woodworking, and watching the Pittsburgh Steelers. Family will receive friends Saturday, March 12, 2011 from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the memorial service. The Reverend Dr. Julia Wharff Piermont will officiate at the service, beginning 3:30 p.m. at Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church, 4417 Bigger Road, Dayton, 45440.
