William Hull Cuthbertson

CUTHBERTSON, William H., beloved husband, father, and grandfather; respected businessman and community leader; and beacon of integrity, intelligence, and generosity, died unexpectedly April 1st, 2010 in Camden, ME. He was 84. Born at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, Mr. Cuthbertson lived most of his life in Dayton where he played an integral part in the business, church, and social communities. He attended Fairview High School and Northwestern University. During college Mr. Cuthbertson was involved in ROTC and served as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. Following this service, he returned to Northwestern and graduated with Honors with his B.S. in Engineering. Mr. Cuthbertson worked in Chicago for three years before taking a position with National Cash Register in Dayton, where he had a successful career for 41 years. He rose to the position of Assistant Vice President for Quality Assurance and as such, was head of Quality Assurance for NCR worldwide, including maintaining quality control over operations in Japan, Germany, Scotland, Netherlands, Canada, Brazil, and Mexico. According to those who worked for him, Mr. Cuthbertson is fondly remembered as an exceptional leader who, �took a very serious approach to meeting customer expectations and maintaining customer satisfaction,� an approach, they say, was instrumental in creating overall corporate success. Additionally, he was highly regarded as a mentor who worked tirelessly for his employees. �He made it a priority to advance his employees� careers and put others� success ahead of his own.� Mr. Cuthbertson was highly involved in the Dayton community and served as a board member and trustee for several organizations including: Children�s Medical Center, Dayton Art Institute, and The Miami Valley School. He was a member of and served as an Elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Additionally, in his retirement, Mr. Cuthbertson headed up a citywide effort to establish quality control within Dayton area corporations. Mr. Cuthbertson was a member of the Oakwood Rotary, 49 Club of Dayton, Dayton Country Club, NCR Country Club, and the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. In his spare time, Mr. Cuthbertson was an avid sailor, golfer, and photographer. He learned to sail on Lake Michigan while living in Chicago and continued his life long love of the sport by sailing his own craft on area lakes. He treasured the times he chartered boats with his sons and passed on his love of the sport to them. Much of Mr. Cuthbertson�s free time was spent taking and developing his own photographs. He not only documented family growth and events, but his keen eye for color and composition also captured breathtaking landscapes and scenes of seasonal beauty. Mr. Cuthbertson and his wife Virginia summered for many years in Rockport, ME where he sailed, played golf, and served for several years on the Board of the Samoset Homeowners Association. In 2008, he and Virginia moved permanently to Camden where he enjoyed his final days at Quarry Hill. William will be remembered for his exuberance for life, wise and measured counsel, gracious manner, and exceptional generosity and kindness to all who had the joy of knowing him. His parents Rose Brown Cuthbertson and Harry W. Cuthbertson, and his daughter Susan Clark Cuthbertson precede Mr. Cuthbertson in death. He is survived by his wife Eleanor Virginia Cuthbertson; sons James Hull Cuthbertson and his wife Kathy of Thomaston, ME, Stephen Kendall Cuthbertson and his wife Tammy of St. Paul, MN, John Charles Oakman and his wife Liz of St. Paul, MN; and daughter Margaret Oakman Crossan of Wenham, MA. Additionally he is survived by his nine grandchildren: Abigail Cuthbertson, Emily Cuthbertson, Shea Cuthbertson, Bill Cuthbertson, Samuel Crossan, Eleanor Crossan, Sarah Crossan, Eleanor Oakman, and Annie Oakman. A Memorial service will be held Saturday, May 29, 2010 at 3:00PM at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 125 N. Wilkinson Street, Dayton.
