William P. Loe, age 88, of Dayton, passed away at his home on Saturday, December 5, 2015. Bill was born in Springfield, Ohio December 22, 1926, the son of William T. and Hilda May (Holmes) Loe, and was a member of Incarnation Catholic Church. He celebrated 60 years of loving marriage with his wife Mary M. (Juergens) Loe in July. Bill was a loving husband and father who sacrificed to ensure the safety and care of his family and our nation.
His family misses him dearly.
Bill studied engineering at Purdue University before military service. He served a year in the Merchant Marine aboard an Army ship supplying and establishing radio-weather stations in remote corners of Greenland. He then spent two years in electronics with the U.S. Coast Guard, with six months of his tour served on a U.S. Navy transmitter station on Oahu.
Bill obtained a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Dayton in 1952, and immediately began working as a physicist-electronic scientist for the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He later was a U.S. liaison for data exchange with France. Bill was annually presented with Sustained Superior Performance Awards.
Bill was one of 10 civilians across America selected in 1964 to attend the Air War College in Montgomery, AL. The college is the highest level of professional education in aerospace power conducted by the U.S. Air Force, and is a year's graduate-level study of international affairs and national security. He concurrently earned a Master of Science degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. Bill resumed work at Wright-Patterson following his Air War College graduation as a "Distinguished Graduate," becoming a Director of Engineering. Bill retired in 1988 after a 35-year career at Wright-Patterson.
Bill graduated from Catholic Central High School in Springfield, OH and also took various courses at Wittenberg University, and Wright State University.
Bill's leisure activities revolved around sports cars, chess, reading, photography, swimming, sailing, and bicycling. He gave generously of his time volunteering in his community throughout his retirement. Bill had an incredible quick wit, and utilized his terrific sense of humor to bring enjoyment to others.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Robert E. Loe.
Bill is survived by his wife, Mary M. (Juergens) Loe; his sister, Lorraine Bryson; three sons, W. Anthony (Diana) Loe, Gary Loe, and Gregory (Mihn) Loe; and a daughter, Julie Loe Smith; eight grandchildren, W. Taylor, Devin, Erica, Bennett, Kristina, Joshua, Jonathan, and Marianela; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Service will be held at 12 noon on Monday, December 14, 2015 at Incarnation Catholic Church, 7415 Far Hills Ave. in Centerville, OH. Visitation will be held one hour (11 a.m. to 12 noon) at the church. Reception will also follow after Mass in the Incarnation Parish Center. A private interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Dayton, OH.
